Oak & Elm

Welcome to Oak and Elm, our Year 6 classes.. Year 6 is a very special and exciting year as children prepare for the transition to high school. We focus on developing independence, resilience and confidence, while ensuring every child feels supported and ready for their next chapter.

We provide a positive, challenging and nurturing learning environment, where children are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning, embrace new challenges and develop the skills they need to become confident, independent young people.

During Year 6, our children develop key skills across the curriculum, including:

  • Reading & Writing – developing fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and sophisticated writing skills, with a strong focus on grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Maths – applying knowledge of number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, geometry and calculation to increasingly challenging problems.
  • Science – investigating, questioning and developing a deeper understanding of the world through scientific enquiry.
  • History & Geography – exploring significant historical events and people while developing a deeper understanding of places, environments and the wider world.
  • Computing – developing digital skills and understanding how technology can be used safely, responsibly and creatively.
  • Art, Design & Music – developing creativity, confidence and self-expression through a range of artistic and musical experiences.
  • PE & Forest School – developing physical skills, teamwork, resilience and an understanding of how to keep our minds and bodies healthy.
  • PSHE & Personal Development – developing independence, emotional wellbeing, positive relationships and the confidence to make responsible choices.

Our exciting topics include Charles Darwin and his Theory of Evolution, World War II, giving children opportunities to explore fascinating ideas, ask thoughtful questions and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Throughout the year, we enjoy a range of memorable trips and experiences, including our much-anticipated residential trip. We also welcome special visitors into school, including those who can share important personal experiences and help bring our learning to life.

We work hard to prepare our children for their SATs at the end of Year 6, while ensuring that their wellbeing, happiness and individual needs remain at the heart of everything we do.

At Heaton Park Primary, we encourage our Year 6 children to be resilient, independent and confident, celebrating their achievements and supporting them to embrace every opportunity. We are proud to help them prepare for the exciting journey ahead as they take their next steps into high school.
